Let's Put the Microscope on Tuesday's Slate of NSFW Kickstarter Comics Launches
First-glance analysis of recent Kickstarter Comics launches, all summarized in one place!
The mission of The Comic$ Crowd is to curate the crowdfunding campaigns in the Kickstarter Comics category in order to identify and spotlight those projects most likely to yield actual comics and to yield the most high quality comics in terms of story, design, and cover/interior artwork.
My Current Comic Project
Launching on Kickstarter January 13:
Darkwoven is a new hard science fiction comic book series that is equal parts dark cyberpunk and epic fantasy with direct parallels to real horrors in our modern world. Story & script by me. Art by Oscar Pinto. Color by Vito Potenza.
In a world where the dark web is a place of quantum banishment for enemies to the corrupt and the powerful, a couple and their unborn daughter are hunted down and captured for their very memories.
And we’re offering some really fun bling bags as a central part of this campaign:

As with any creative venture, not all NSFW products are created equal. In fact, when it comes to NSFW comics on Kickstarter, there is a broad gulf between what might be considered a “good” comic and what is just titties as imagined and rendered by a middle school bully who’s never actually experienced breasts and yet considers himself a degreed expert. Believe me when I tell you the skew of project volume is heavily weighted toward that latter side of the scale, with quality NSFW projects few and far between.
So, let’s take a comparative look at the basic attributes of the 6 NSFW comics launched on Tuesday, January 6:
HELLCATS #3 - SMOKI and the BANDIT!!! aka ASS, CASH OR GAS! ($10,248)
Porn cover mill
2 pages of sequential art almost entirely covered in censor bars
Mid- to low-level cover art quality, relative to other NSFW projects
Story: 2-sentence synopsis
Absolutely no sign of Burt Reynolds or Jerry Reed
Tech-Sex #1 - NSFW sci-fi thriller for fans of Black Mirror ($9746)
Porn cover mill featuring nude renderings of a Pikachu cosplayer, Harley Quinn, and Sailor Moon (a teenage character)
2 pages of mid- to low-level sequential art with plenty of censor bars
Low-level cover art quality, relative to other NSFW projects
Story: 2-sentence synopsis that basically suggests a character uses VR tech
Laughably compares its story to profound dark future anthology show, Black Mirror
Cheeky Comics Annual 2026 - Three Spicy Stories ($27,055)
Porn cover mill featuring elegantly rendered, often photorealistic images
Plenty of gorgeous sequential art samples with no censor bars needed (other than the nude cover editions)
High-level cover art quality, relative to other NSFW projects
Story: Detailed and descriptive story synopses
NSFW material from this group is top of the heap on Kickstarter
DEAD END MOON #5: A Supernatural Western ($21,048)
Porn cover mill featuring elegantly rendered, often photorealistic images
Plenty of really attractive, nicely composedjj sequential art samples with no censor bars needed (other than the nude cover editions)
Above average cover art quality, relative to other NSFW projects
Story: Informative, descriptive story synopsis
Faro’s American Safari - WASHINGTON - Alice in Wonderchains ($11,624)
Not a comic. No story. Just a sketchbook of raunchy porn images of other people’s characters.
Thrill Trigger: Unbuttoned ($6169)
Porn cover mill but not a comic. No story. Just a sketchbook of seemingly random nude female characters.
So, if ya wanna make a quick buck in the Kickstarter Comics category, just roll out 24 pages of images of naked women and watch the pledges add up. Hell, the images don’t even need to be attractive, although note that the highest performing projects above are the two with actual next-level art and genuine attempts at story. It’s good to see the real comics rising above the rest.
Speaking of real comics, here are 4 from Tuesday you need to check out:

Is the "secret to success" on Kickstarter actually doing NSFW comics, or are only very particular creators making money in that genre? As someone who does NSFW projects, and NOT making 5 figures, btw... I rankle at the constant accusation that NSFW is an easy cash grab anybody can do. Do the numbers really match up with that assessment, or was that comment just ironic frustration?
Thanks for the shout out!
