The View from the Gutter
Recent Kickstarter Comics launches betray a disturbing trend I’ve pointed out a few times, but it’s particularly evident for drops from this past Wednesday. After reviewing each campaign that launched that day, 4 stood out above the others as ‘Comics I Like’, and, coincidentally, 3 of those are from first-time creators on Kickstarter (the 4th is a 4-time Kickstarter creator). That’s…unexpected…but, hey, those projects are primo based on my recommendation criteria.
Now, as for that brutal trend, only one of those campaigns has more than 17 backers 3 days into their Kickstarter lifespans. The last, EARTH TO MARCY #1, sports 39 backers. Each set fair and realistic funding goals, none higher than $1600, but only 2 of them have yet surpassed that initial target amount.
Without rehashing previous conjecture about why this is happening, I think it’s fair to assume much of the blame falls on simply being at the front end of audience-building for new creators. They’re also competing with a pair of very successful porn cover mills that dropped on the same day, but those don’t hold a candle to the story, art and overall craft evident in the 4 recommended projects.
Regardless why, I encourage you to visit these campaigns and support those that suit your tastes in comics. These are new creators, at least new to Kickstarter, and their promising work deserves your pledge.
Comics I Like
'A masterwork in the making', this 15 part series is a darkly comic thriller, which has been called a British Twin Peaks.
Adam Warmbath has a lot on his plate. He’s not short of currency, but yachts and trophy wives don’t float his boat. He’s not right-wing and he’s not left-wing; he is knowing…and he knows who is harming the children. He’s hatching a plan to stop them whilst juggling pressing matters on his own doorstep: greedy builders, a visitor with a gun and public displays of his daughter’s privacy, all need his attention too.

Cancel Haus looks terrific; I wonder how it escaped my attention for so long. This is why I value your monitoring!
As for Lost Days, I think the problem is that we may have reached zombie saturation. It does not help that we are told this campaign for an ashcan issue is only a stepping stone to a campaign for a colorized version: why not just wait for the latter? But of course if this one is not successful there may not be a second campaign. I think the creator has needlessly boxed himself in here.
Earth to Marcy looks great and I’ll probably do my usual digital tier but man, September of next year? I hope to have my one-shot out for months at that point and my graphic novel finishing up art production by then. That’s the big hiccup for that campaign in my eyes.
It takes a creator with a long history of producing to instill year plus confidence in a horrible economic landscape.
