The View from the Gutter
The weekend was pretty slow in terms of Kickstarter Comics launches, with only 14 new drops between Friday and Sunday. There were a few really choice projects in that mix, so check those out with links and full details below. However, there were also a few duds (4 out of 14 launches) that, as we too often see, failed to show a single page of sequential art at any point of development. You may tire of reading my commentary on this glaring absence of the defining feature of comics, but allow me to reiterate why it’s important to show samples of sequential art from the actual project seeking funding
Finishing a page of sequential art is the most difficult accomplishment in the process of crafting a comic.
And, if a creator can’t show at least a page (hopefully more) of real, finished sequential art for their comic for which they’re asking you to pledge your money, I have zero confidence that an actual comic will ever result from that creator’s crowdfunding campaign. It’s that simple

Why is finishing pages of sequential art difficult? Let me provide a list:
It’s a skill acquired through learning and practice, not something common to just anyone.
It takes time and dedication that prove a commitment to realizing a completed project.
It takes talent and mastery of the craft to do it in a manner that is attractive, visually narrative, and effective.
It is equally difficult to find an artist with the above traits who is also available and interested to work with you without quitting or ghosting before it’s done.
I wish making comics was as simple as just wanting to or dreaming about it, but it’s not. Before any backers on Kickstarter even consider backing your project, you must prove, with sequential art samples, that you can and will finish the comic.
